Trick or Teeth! Halloween Candy That’s Safe for Kids

Dentists and orthodontists love Halloween as much as the next person. What they don’t love is the number of kids who get cavities after they finish off the mountains of candy they get after Halloween. But how can there be Halloween if the Trick or Treaters don’t get candy? It’s simple! Give the kids Halloween candy that is both delicious and healthy! Here are some tips to protect those tiny teeth during the Halloween season:

Give the kids sugar-free candy that is both delicious and healthy! Here is a list of treats that you can give:

·         Sugar-free candy and lollipops – They can stimulate saliva, which helps prevent dry mouth. A dry mouth allows plaque to build up on teeth, which can lead to cavities.

·    Sugar-free bubble gum – They can dislodge food particles in the mouth and help produce saliva.

·         Sugar-free gummy candy – Not only are they healthy, but they’re also fun to eat.

·     Sweetened granola bars – These are very healthy and rich in fiber, which can aide in digestion. You can even make your own!

·         Dark chocolate – These are perfect for both kids and adults. Their anti-oxidant properties are good for the heart and can lower your blood pressure.

You can get all of these at your local grocery store or health food outlet. But wait! Kids these days are way smarter so they know when they’re being given “fake” candy. Here’s another tip for those kids that you just can’t outsmart.

Unwrap the candies that you bought from the store and repackage them in non-toxic cellophane or foil wrappers. If you want, you can even design your own wrappers using tissue or art paper, for a more festive Halloween give-away.

Don’t forget. Before the kids leave your doorstep, give them some helpful advice. “Always brush your teeth!”

For those of you who have been victims of Halloween candy overload, bring your cavities over to your neighbourhood dentist. You can even get a consultation for those badly damaged teeth at your orthodontist. Visit your nearest Orthoworks office and remedy those post-Halloween teeth dilemmas.
